Ricky Weiss Heads to Volusia for DIRTcar Nationals

Ricky Weiss returned to action on Monday night at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) for the 46th annual UMP DIRTcar Nationals. Drawing 43 Super Late Models, Ricky qualified eighth fastest in his qualifying group before registering a 6th place finish in his heat. Transferring into the B-Main for one more shot at the opening night feature, Weiss came up one position short with a 5th place finish.

On Tuesday starting 6th in his heat race, Ricky logged a 5th place finish putting him 3rd on the starting rundown for the B-Main. Transferring the Top 3 into the $7,000-to-win A-Main, Weiss secured his spot with a 2nd place finish behind Kenny Pettyjohn. With continuous rain cancelling both Wednesday and Thursday’s shows, Weiss returned to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) on Friday for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series sanctioned program. Starting 4th in his heat, Ricky slipped back to a 5th place finish sending him into the B-Main. Needing to place in the Top 2 to make the feature, Weiss fell short with a 5th place outing.

Wrapping up the 46th annual DIRTcar Nationals on Saturday, Weiss logged a 9th place finish in his heat giving him one last shot at the $10,000-to-win finale with a B-Main appearance. Slated to start near the tail of the consolation event, Weiss decided to save equipment and called it a night.

Top 10 Finish for Weiss in Second Night of Wrisco Winternationals at East Bay

On Monday night Ricky Weiss picked back up with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) at East Bay Raceway Park (Gibsonton, Florida) for the 41st annual Wrisco Winternationals. In a field of 44 cars, Weiss followed up the 3rd fastest time in his qualifying group with the 4th and final transfer spot in his heat race. With $5,000 on the line in the opening night A-Main, Ricky fell back to a 21st place outing.

The following night starting on the fourth row of his heat, Weiss came one spot short of a transfer position with a 5th place finish. Earning the pole position for his consolation event, Ricky cruised to a B-Main locking his spot into the A-Main. With the weather cancelling Wednesday night’s portion of the Wrisco Winternationals, Weiss was one of 45 Super Late Models signed in at East Bay Raceway Park (Gibsonton, Florida) on Thursday for the $7,000-to-win main event. Falling back to a 9th place finish in his heat after bringing out a caution on the second-to-last lap, Weiss transferred into the B-Main for another shot at the feature. Coming short of a transfer spot with a 5th place finish, Ricky had one final shot at the A-Main with an appearance in the DirtonDirt.com Strawberry Dash. Taking only the race winner, Ricky wheeled his way to the front earning the 24th-starting position for the feature. Moving up seven positions, Ricky Weiss logged a 17th place outing.

Returning on Friday night for the $10,000-to-win A-Main, Ricky earned the 9th-starting position for his heat via qualifying. Coming two spots short of a transfer position with a 6th finish, Weiss transferred into the B-Main. Failing to place in the Top 6 in the 12-lap consolation event, Ricky had one final shot at the feature with the DirtonDirt.com Strawberry Dash. Starting in 4th, Weiss slipped back to a 9th place outing bringing an early end to his night.

Saturday night’s $12,000-to-win LOLMDS finale was cancelled due to bad weather.

Weiss Begins Season at Golden Isles Speedway

The 2017 racing season began for Ricky Weiss on Friday at Golden Isles Speedway (Brunswick, Georgia) for the two-day Rhino Ag Super Bowl of Racing. With 51 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) entries in action for the season-opener, Ricky was leading his heat race until another competitor made contact with him spinning them both and sending them to the tail. Needing a 2nd place finish or better in his consolation event to make the $10,000-to-win A-Main, Weiss fell back to a 13th place outing.

Returning on Saturday for the $12,000 top prize, Weiss got turned around on the last lap of his heat sending him back to a 8th place outing. Slated to start near the back of his B-Main, Ricky decided to pack up and prepare for the remaining Speedweek events. (Heath Lawson photo)
