Crate Racin' USA Dirt Late Model Series

Weiss Passes Cooper Late To Win Tazewell

(Tazewell, TN - 6/21/24) - The 6th Annual Melvin Corum Memorial saw Headingley, MB Canada native Ricky Weiss score his second career Rogers-Dabbs Performance Parts Crate Racin' USA Dirt Late Model Series victory, cashing in on a $10,000 payday at Tazewell Speedway. Weiss trailed youngster Luke Cooper of Woodruff, SC with 12 laps to go before making the winning pass on lap 39 in turns one and two. Cooper went on to finish second, holding off Josh Collins and Cruise with the Champions Rookie of the Year contender Bubba Roling. This marked Roling's first top five of the 2024 season and former series champion Jason Welshan of Maryville, TN would round out the top five at the end of the 50 lap feature.

The original event on June 1st began with Stakt Products by CV Racing Products Time Trials, where youngster Luke Cooper of Woodruff, SC laid down the fastest lap with a 12.028. Cooper was the last car scheduled to take the track for time trials of the 30 entries for the event, and his performance put him on the pole for Chevrolet Performance Heat Race 3. Tazewell, TN driver Odie Overholt laid down the fastest lap in group 1 with a 12.172, the fastest lap up until Cooper's 12.028 at the end of time trials. Former series champion Jason Welshan of Maryville, TN put down the fastest lap in group 2 with a 12.358, just ahead of Cruise with the Champions Rookie of the Year contender Bubba Roling of Clay Hill, FL. Roling clocked in at 12.420 in his first ever visit to the "Bad Fast Taz."

The Chevrolet Performance heat races got underway with Clyde Overholt and Skylar Marlar leading the way in heat race number 1. Marlar wasted no time getting out front and cruising to the win in heat race 1. Heat race number 2 saw former series champion Jason Welshan and Cruise with the Champions Rookie of the Year contender Bubba Roling lead the way. Welshan got the jump on the opening lap and led all 10 circuits on his way to the Chevrolet Performance Heat race 2 win. It would be 20 days later before Chevrolet Performance Heat Race 3 would line back up, and Luke Cooper of Woodruff, SC backed up his fastest overall time by leading all 10 laps ahead of local driver Josh Collins for the Chevrolet Performance Heat race 3 win, securing the pole position for the 50-lap main event.

One final preliminary race was left to set the feature field. In the Rogers-Dabbs Chevrolet B-Main, Richard Bailey of Tazewell, TN started on the pole alongside Jordan Horton. Bailey rocketed to the lead on lap one and led 9 of the 10 laps before his car went up in smoke in turn one after taking the white flag. This left Jordan Horton of New Tazewell, TN in the lead, and he stayed there to win the Rogers-Dabbs Chevrolet B-Main. This set the stage for the 50-lap feature event with 25 starters scheduled to take the green.

The series will now head towards Seymour, TN and the Mitch McCarter-owned 411 Motor Speedway for the 13th Annual J.T. Kerr Memorial, paying $10,000 to win. Pit gates will open at noon with grandstands opening at 3 PM, and the drivers' meeting is scheduled for 6 PM. Racing action will also include Sportsman Late Models ($1000 to win), Open Wheels ($1000 to win), Street Stocks ($700 to win), FWD ($500 to win), and Crown Vic’s ($400 to win). We hope to see you at the track, but if you can't make it, watch every lap exclusively on Crate Racin' USA TV.
